About this specimen
A pocket of deep emerald crystals occupies the middle of a tan, spongy matrix, ringed by darker brown rock the way a clearing is ringed by trees. The dioptase is stout and steeply terminated — a dozen or so crystals, the largest of them near a centimetre, with a scatter of smaller ones around the margins — and the green is the saturated bottle-green only copper produces, near-black in the shadowed hollows and blazing where a face turns to the light.
Dioptase is a hydrated copper silicate, CuSiO3·H2O. Mohs 5 sounds durable, but perfect cleavage in three directions makes it brittle: a knock on a crystal tip takes a chip off cleanly, and an ultrasonic cleaner will ruin it. Tsumeb, in northern Namibia, is the classic source for the species, and matrix pieces with the crystals still seated in their host pocket are the ones collectors pursue.
