수백 개의 작은 주황색 결정이 이 모로코 판 위에 몰려 있으며, 하나하나가 몇 밀리미터 크기의 뭉툭한 블록으로 어깨를 맞대고 빽빽하게 채워져 표면이 하나의 연속된 껍질처럼 읽힙니다. 색은 바깥 면의 밝은 귤빛에서, 결정이 아래의 황토색 피각 위에 바싹 붙어 있는 곳의 적갈색까지 이어지며, 모든 정단부가 유리처럼 단단한 빛을 되쏩니다.
울페나이트는 몰리브데넘산 납 PbMoO4로, 크기에 비해 무겁고 모스 경도 3으로 무릅니다. 이런 밀집은 결정이 옆으로 퍼지는 속도보다 빠르게 핵을 만들 때 일어나며, 그래서 몇 개의 넓은 판 대신 수백 개의 작은 결정이 모자이크를 이룹니다. 받침을 잡고 다루시고, 거친 표면에서 멀리 두시며, 부드러운 솔보다 강한 것으로는 닦지 마십시오.
