설탕 알갱이보다 크지 않은 크롬 그린 결정들이 이 탄자니아 판상 표본의 앞면을 껍질처럼 뒤덮고 있습니다. 하나하나가 유리질의 작은 십이면체이며, 모여서 에메랄드빛과 흰빛의 반점으로 빛을 되쏩니다. 왼쪽 위로 갈수록 피복이 얇아지면서 짙은 회색 모암이 드러나, 초록색이 타오를 바탕이 되어 줍니다.
그로슐라는 석류석 그룹에서 칼슘과 알루미늄을 지닌 종으로 화학식은 Ca3Al2(SiO4)3이며, 이처럼 짙은 초록은 알루미늄 자리를 대신한 미량의 크롬과 바나듐에서 비롯됩니다. 이런 결정은 뜨거운 유체가 불순한 석회암을 다시 빚어내는 곳에서 자라며, 큰 결정 몇 개 대신 수천 개의 작은 개체가 공동 벽면을 채웁니다. 경도 6.5~7.5에 쪼개짐이 없어, 반짝임에서 짐작되는 것보다 훨씬 단단합니다.
