About this specimen

Yunnan radiating blue aragonite at 10.6 cm and 394 g; a cabinet piece. A block of sky-blue botryoidal aragonite over a base of white acicular aragonite needles, the blue bubbles glossy and the needles fine.

Aragonite is chemically the same as calcite but crystallises differently, which is why it builds sprays and columns instead of blocky rhombs.

Yunnan's copper and lead-zinc districts produce the azurite, malachite, pyromorphite, hemimorphite and blue aragonite that define Chinese secondary minerals.

Dimensions place it in the cabinet range, 10.6 × 8.8 × 5.5 cm (4.17 × 3.46 × 2.17 in) and 394 g (13.9 oz). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.

Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.

Each specimen is individually photographed and catalogued before it is listed.
