About this specimen
Yunnan red aragonite at 3 cm; a miniature, supplied on the acrylic stand shown. A thick cap of aragonite in a strong magenta pink covers the top of the piece, the crystalline surface catching light unevenly so the colour shifts as the piece is turned.
Aragonite is chemically the same as calcite but crystallises differently, which is why it builds sprays and columns instead of blocky rhombs.
Yunnan is China's most mineralogically diverse province, source of the pyromorphite, azurite and blue aragonite that have become collector favourites.
The piece is miniature in size, 3 × 2.6 × 1.5 cm (1.18 × 1.02 × 0.59 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
