About this specimen

Guangdong botryoidal pyrite with quartz at 14.5 × 12.5 × 14 cm and 3878 g; a large cabinet piece. Keep dry. A rounded geode opened into a bowl, its interior lined with black botryoidal pyrite and clear quartz crystals, the treasure basin the supplier names, with a pale crystalline rim.

Pyrite grows as cubes, pyritohedra and octahedra with a brassy metallic lustre; Chinese pyrite is known for sharp, mirror-faced crystals.

Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three.

Guangdong is the source of the red hematoid quartz and green phantom quartz that reached collectors after 2015.

Dimensions place it in the large cabinet range, 14.5 × 12.5 × 14 cm (5.71 × 4.92 × 5.51 in) and 3878 g (136.8 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
