About this specimen
Two blocky metallic crystals hold this specimen, stacked one above the other. The upper is steel-silver with a brassy cast and a wrinkled, etched-looking surface; the lower is warm bronze-brown, its broad face polished to a mirror and ruled with fine growth striations. Both sit in a cream-white sugary druse that spreads away to one side in a low mound, with a single colourless quartz crystal glinting at the base.
Chalcopyrite is copper iron sulphide, CuFeS2, Mohs 3.5 to 4 — brass-yellow on a fresh break, but exposed faces tarnish quickly to precisely the bronze, pewter and gunmetal tones seen here. That tarnish is a surface film and is best left alone: scrubbing it back to bright metal strips the patina collectors look for and can etch the crystal faces in the process.
