About this specimen
Cocoa brown meets butterscotch across a sharp inner angle. Two big calcite rhombs are grown into one another here: the upper one deep, almost bitter-chocolate, its broad face smooth and satin; the lower one warm amber, lit from inside and freckled with tiny droplet-like crystals scattered over it. A third crystal, pale smoky rose and semi-transparent, sits to the left with feathery internal veils, and thin colourless ribbons of later growth pick out several edges when the light catches them.
Brown in calcite usually traces to iron and traces of organic matter picked up while the crystal grew — the same CaCO3 that makes water-clear Iceland spar, tinted by its surroundings. At Mohs 3 with perfect rhombohedral cleavage it splits cleanly if dropped or knocked, so a padded shelf beats a crowded one.
7.6 × 4.3 × 5.1 cm and 175 g, solid in the hand. These photographs record this group alone.
