About this specimen
The carver left the rough side up. Across this elephant’s back, where you would expect a smooth curve, a blocky natural crust of milky quartz crystals has been kept intact, so the animal appears to be wearing a rock blanket. Below it the body is worked in snow-white, faintly translucent quartz — folded ears, a short trunk tucked between the front legs, and two small polished onyx beads set for eyes.
Shaping white quartz is slow work: at Mohs 7 the material scratches steel, and it yields only to diamond abrasives, which is part of why the finish here stays satin rather than mirror-bright. The standing elephant with its trunk down is a long-running motif in Chinese stone carving, and the choice this maker made — worked form set against untouched druse — is what gives the little animal its character.
It is a solid thing for its size: 6.6 × 6.4 × 5.1 cm and 285 g, heavy enough to hold papers down, small enough to close a hand around. No stand is used or needed; the elephant photographed here is the one you will receive.
