About this specimen

Violet cores fade outward into lilac, and the lilac fades again into an almost colourless rim, so cube after cube on this plate reads as a set of nested squares. Etching has left the corners stepped, each face a shallow staircase catching light at a dozen angles. The crystals run from roughly a centimetre across down to a few millimetres, crowded three deep over ochre-yellow host rock that shows above and below the group.

Those steps are not damage. Late fluids still moving through the pocket after the fluorite had finished growing dissolved the crystals back along their edges, leaving the slightly frosted, terraced faces here — a texture Guizhou is known among collectors for producing well. Fluorite is Mohs 4 with perfect octahedral cleavage, and on a piece like this the projecting corners are the vulnerable part.

8.4 × 6.4 × 4.3 cm and 235 g, held in the photograph so the scale stays honest. This cluster is the one that will be packed.
