About this specimen
Shanxi red hematoid quartz at 3 cm; a miniature, supplied in the perky box shown. Quartz crystals coloured a deep orange-red by hematite stand in a group on matrix of the same colour, the larger points showing clean pyramid faces above a frosted base.
The red comes from included hematite, and the effect is strongest where the crystals are thinnest.
Shanxi produces calcite, fluorite and quartz from its lead-zinc and fluorite districts.
The piece is miniature in size, 3 × 3 × 1.6 cm (1.18 × 1.18 × 0.63 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
