About this specimen
Petal on petal of milk-white calcite folds across this small cluster, the blades thin enough to glow where light passes through their edges and laid down in overlapping fans that genuinely do read as a flower head. Between them, small grey translucent crystals and patches of dark grey rock show through, giving the white something to push against.
Bladed calcite of this sort forms in low-temperature veins, where flat, tabular growth wins out over the blocky rhombs most people picture when they hear the species name. Calcite (CaCO3) is Mohs 3 and cleaves perfectly in three directions, so blades this thin chip easily: lift the specimen from its base, never by a petal, and store it where nothing harder can shift against it.
Small and easily shelved at 4.6 × 2.5 × 3.0 cm and 48 g. No stand is included, and the cluster was photographed just as it is — these pictures show this specimen and not a comparable one.
