About this specimen

The dominant cube here is the colour of thin honey held up to a window, transparent enough that its back edges show through the front face as ghost lines. Smaller yellow cubes step down to the left and below, and the group is bedded into a cream-white matrix that gathers around their bases like drifted snow. One face carries a faint satin sheen where growth left it very slightly terraced.

Yanqing County, on the mountainous northwestern rim of Beijing municipality, turns out fluorite in exactly this register: plain cubes, straw to honey yellow, without the phantom pyrotechnics of the Hunan mines. The restraint is the point — here the form carries the whole argument. Fluorite is CaF2 at Mohs 4 and cleaves perfectly in four directions, so keep it off hard surfaces and clean it with nothing stronger than a damp brush.

Overall 5.1 × 3.6 × 3.0 cm and 71 g, mounted on a clear acrylic block. The piece pictured is the piece shipped, still on the block it was set on.
