About this specimen
Cut in stepped tiers like a conifer seen in silhouette, this fluorite tree wears a sugar-textured white surface across its branch faces that catches light in thousands of points. The sawn edges tell a different story: there the block opens into soft mint-green bands running diagonally through the trunk and the lower tiers, pale where they meet the white and deepening toward the core.
Fluorite is calcium fluoride, CaF2, cubic, and its green-and-white zoning records shifts in trace chemistry as the original crystal grew — the cutter simply worked across those layers rather than along them. At Mohs 4, with perfect cleavage in four directions, fluorite gives way easily under a saw and just as easily under a dropped-on-the-floor moment. Keep it out of long direct sun; dust it with a dry brush.
A substantial piece at 17.5 × 4.3 × 9.9 cm and 1.4 kg (1400 g). Two trees stand in the photograph, shot on black glass, so the range of green banding can be compared; the measurements above describe one tree.
