About this specimen

Hold this one to a window and the ghosts appear: inside each pale lilac cube sits a darker violet square, a smaller crystal frozen mid-growth and then buried under clearer fluorite. The group is built from a dozen cubes stacked in staircase fashion, edges crisp, faces flat and glassy, with a faint terrace where each layer stopped short of the last.

Phantoms are a record of a change in the water that made the crystal — a pulse richer in colour centres, then a return to near-colourless growth. Yaogangxian in Chenzhou, Hunan, produces them across the purple range, and it is the paler, more transparent material like this that actually shows the internal geometry instead of hiding it. Fluorite is CaF2, Mohs 4, with perfect cleavage on all four octahedral directions: it minds knocks and sudden temperature changes far more than it minds dust.

Compact at 4.1 × 3.6 × 2.8 cm and 51 g, and it sits steady without a base. Every photograph on this page shows this individual crystal group; no substitute will be sent.
