About this specimen

Colour pools in the corners of this piece: every cube runs pale lilac through the middle of its faces and deepens to grape-violet along the edges and angles, so the group reads as a set of nested purple frames. The cubes interlock into one thumb-sized mass, faces satin rather than mirror-bright, with a crumb of pale matrix still gripping the underside.

That edge-loaded colour is growth zoning. Purple in fluorite comes from colour centres in the lattice, and their density shifted as the crystal grew, leaving the record legible from outside. Fluorite (CaF2) is Mohs 4 with perfect cleavage on four octahedral planes, so a knock takes a wedge off a corner cleanly rather than scuffing it. A soft brush is all the cleaning it should ever get.

The cluster measures 4.8 × 3.8 × 2.8 cm and weighs 60 g. No base is fitted; it sits square in the hand or on a small pedestal. The photographs on this page are of this cluster and no other.
