About this specimen
Bulgaria, galena with dolomite at 2.9 cm; a miniature, supplied in the display box shown. Steel-grey galena crystals sit among a crust of cream dolomite, the metallic faces flat and bright where the carbonate has not grown over them.
Galena is lead sulfide, forming heavy, mirror-bright cubes and octahedra; it is the classic companion of sphalerite and quartz in lead-zinc deposits.
Dolomite forms curved, saddle-shaped rhombs with a pearly lustre and is the usual companion of calcite and fluorite in Chinese carbonate deposits.
The Rhodope lead-zinc mines of Bulgaria — Madan, Rhodope and Kruschev Dol — are Europe's classic source of galena, sphalerite, quartz and pink manganoan calcite.
By size it is miniature, 2.9 × 2.6 × 1.5 cm (1.14 × 1.02 × 0.59 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
Contains lead-bearing minerals: wash hands after handling and keep away from children and pets. Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.
