A Sichuan combination piece: colourless quartz crystals scattered across a dark bottle-green epidote crust, with tan iron staining in the hollows. The epidote forms the matrix rather than inclusions sealed inside the quartz. 5.0 × 4.0 × 3.0 cm, 130 g.

About this specimen

Bottle-green epidote makes the body of this small Sichuan piece, darkening to near-black where it thickens, and over it lies a scatter of colourless quartz points — short, sharply terminated, catching light like frost settled on moss. A few of the quartz patches carry a warm tan tint where iron has stained them.

Pieces like this are often sold as garden quartz, on the idea that the green grows through the clear crystal. Here the relationship runs the other way and is worth saying plainly: the epidote is the matrix, a crust the quartz has grown on and between, not a plume sealed inside a single crystal. Epidote is an iron-bearing calcium aluminium silicate, and it is that iron that drives the colour from pistachio toward black. Both minerals are hard — quartz 7, epidote 6 to 7 — so the piece takes handling well.

It measures 5.0 × 4.0 × 3.0 cm and weighs 130 g, unmounted. The photograph shows the piece you will receive.
