About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, aquamarine with mica and scheelite at 4.7 cm and 59 g; a miniature. A group of glassy, pale aquamarine crystals stacked upward with silvery mica and a small scheelite crystal at the base.

Aquamarine is the blue-green variety of beryl, forming hexagonal prisms with flat terminations; the Chinese material from Xuebaoding and Yunnan pairs it with muscovite and cassiterite.

Mica books, silvery to bronze, are the usual companion of pegmatite minerals and add a flash of pearly lustre to the piece. Scheelite is calcium tungstate, forming orange to honey-coloured bipyramids with a greasy lustre and a bright blue-white fluorescence under short-wave UV.

Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.

By size it is miniature, 4.7 × 3.2 × 4.2 cm (1.85 × 1.26 × 1.65 in) and 59 g (2.1 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Each specimen is individually photographed and catalogued before it is listed.
