About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, floater aquamarine at 4.3 cm and 16 g; a miniature single crystal. A flat, glassy aquamarine tablet in the palest blue, complete all round as a floater with no matrix, the faces bright and translucent.

Aquamarine is the blue-green variety of beryl, forming hexagonal prisms with flat terminations; the Chinese material from Xuebaoding and Yunnan pairs it with muscovite and cassiterite.

Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.

Dimensions place it in the miniature range, 1.3 × 4.3 × 2.4 cm (0.51 × 1.69 × 0.94 in) and 16 g (0.6 oz). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.

Each specimen is individually photographed and catalogued before it is listed.
