About this specimen

Olive-gold barite blades tile the whole front of this Jiangxi plate, overlapping like scales, each one glassy enough at the tip to throw back a highlight. A seam of cream-white calcite cuts across the middle of the gold field, sugar-fine and opaque, and a second patch of it breaks through at the lower right.

Barite (BaSO4) is the heavy spar of old mining language: a specific gravity above 4.4 means a plate this size lands in the palm with more weight than the eye predicts. The blocky tabular blades here are its classic habit. Calcite (CaCO3) shares the plate and nearly the hardness — barite sits at 3 to 3.5 on the Mohs scale, calcite at 3 — so keep the piece where nothing harder can rub against those blade tips.

The plate measures 8.3 × 4.4 × 7.4 cm and weighs 235 g. It is shown resting in the hand for scale, with no base fitted; the photographs are of this exact plate.
