About this specimen
Frost seems to have settled across the face of this Fujian plate: small fluorite crystals in a pale mint-to-colourless tone pave the entire upper surface, cube faces stepped and re-stepped until the aggregate rises in low rounded mounds. Light sinks some way into the glassy interiors before it catches, and graphite-grey patches of host rock show between the domes.
Fujian fluorite grows in generations — a first crop of cubes buried under a second, smaller crop, so the finished surface reads knobbly rather than sharp. The chemistry stays simple, CaF2, and so does the weakness: Mohs 4, with perfect octahedral cleavage. Lift the plate by its edges, since the raised crystal tips bruise first.
It measures 14.0 × 4.3 × 8.9 cm and weighs 666 g — broad, shallow, and content to stand against a wall on a shelf. No stand is included. What you see photographed here is the piece that ships.
