About this specimen
Solid sage-green fluorite forms the base of this Fujian piece, its surface frosted and granular rather than glassy. Out of it grows the reason to own the specimen: colourless calcite in tight domed rosettes, each one packed from dozens of small rhombs like a head of blossom, the largest close to two centimetres across and clear enough to read light straight through.
Calcite in this rounded aggregate habit is a late arrival — it crystallised in open space after the fluorite had finished, which is why the heads sit cleanly on top with no interpenetration between the two species. Handle the piece by its fluorite base. Calcite is Mohs 3 with perfect rhombohedral cleavage in three directions, and the projecting rosettes are the vulnerable part.
It measures 7.6 × 6.6 × 4.3 cm and weighs 285 g, sized to sit in the palm and to display without a stand. These pictures were taken of this piece alone.
