About this specimen
The colour on this one is loud. Grass-green fluorite runs across the crown and down the cheek, cut by chalk-white bands that sweep across the temple and jaw. Where the green is thin the light goes straight through, so the eye socket glows from inside instead of reading as a dark hole; the white bands stop it dead. Teeth are cut as a simple squared grid, and the back of the head is left full and rounded.
Those bands are the original crystal speaking. Fluorite grows in layers, each pulse of fluid carrying a different trace chemistry and laying transparent green over milky, granular white. A carver working such a block cannot choose where the colour lands, only how the form sits within it. Dust it with a soft dry brush: at Mohs 4 fluorite scratches easily, and heat or an ultrasonic bath can open its cleavage.
Measurements are 10.7 cm long, 5.6 cm deep and 7.9 cm high, weight 690 g. The skull stands unaided on the black glass it was photographed against; no stand accompanies it. Every image here shows this carving and no other.
