About this specimen
One cube does all the work here. Roughly 2.5 cm on an edge, it runs pale translucent lavender through the body and darkens to a bruised violet along every edge, and through the broad front face you can read the ghost of an earlier, smaller cube suspended inside it. A ribbon of cream-white dolomite spheres runs down the right side and gathers again at the upper left, the only matrix the piece carries.
A phantom records a pause. Fluorite (CaF2) grew, took its colour, then stalled while a film of impurity settled on its faces; growth resumed and sealed that outline inside the finished crystal. Yaogangxian in Hunan gives these up in cubes transparent enough to look straight through, which is what makes the internal geometry legible. At Mohs 4 with perfect octahedral cleavage, fluorite prefers to be lifted rather than knocked.
The crystal measures 2.5 × 2.5 × 2.0 cm and weighs 20 g — a thumbnail with a great deal inside it. Photographed in hand above an acrylic display box; these images are of this crystal and no other.
