About this specimen
Half sculpture, half raw pocket. The carver cut a full skull into one side of a mint-green fluorite block — hollow orbits, a clean nasal notch, a banded row of teeth — then stopped at the boundary where the block became a cavity wall, leaving the entire back of the head under its original white druse. Deep green shadows pool inside the sockets, and a faint lilac tint runs through the crust above the temple.
Fluorite is Mohs 4 with perfect cleavage in four directions, which makes carving it slow, low-pressure work: too much force on a corner and the stone opens along a plane instead of taking the tool. Getting a form this size out of green Chinese fluorite without losing a cleavage is the real achievement here — the polish afterwards is almost the easy part.
Substantial in the hand at 9.1 × 6.4 × 7.6 cm and 1332 g, a little over 1.3 kg, it sits square on jaw and base, needing no prop. The dark mirror beneath is the photographer’s bench, not a base, and the skull on it is the one that will be packed and sent.
