About this specimen
Rosettes of fine needles carpet this Guizhou plate from edge to edge, each a tight radiating burst with a white centre, the mass of them a soft khaki-brown that reads almost like moss until you look closely. Riding over the top are the popcorn forms the material is named for: rounded cream-white knobs, several rimmed and stained pale butter-yellow, one of them opened into a ring around a hollow core.
Gypsum is CaSO4·2H2O, and at Mohs 2 it is soft enough to mark with a fingernail. That softness is why acicular sprays like these are so easily damaged, and why the piece is best kept where nothing can brush the needle tips. Store it dry and never rinse it — gypsum is slightly soluble in water.
A broad, one-sided plate with a single display face, offered unmounted and photographed in the hand so the spread of the rosettes reads at a glance. The photographs document this plate itself.
