About this specimen
The stone chosen here is not clear rock crystal but a cloudy milk-grey quartz, and the carver has used that: the sockets read as deep shadow, the incised teeth as crisp white lines, and the cranium keeps a soft translucency at its rim where light gets through. Grey-green mineral patches and rust-orange staining sit within the mass like bruises under skin, giving the face a weathered, dug-up look.
Quartz is Mohs 7 and unforgiving to work — every socket, suture and tooth had to be ground rather than cut, which is why a carving of this size in quartz is far heavier labour than the same form in calcite or serpentine. The payoff is durability: almost nothing in an ordinary room is hard enough to scratch it, and it will not nick from a fingernail catch the way a soft carving stone does.
It is a substantial object — 10.2 × 6.4 × 8.9 cm and 1247 g, a little over 1.2 kg. You are looking at the actual carving, not a representative sample; it stands upright on its own ground base and needs no support.
