About this specimen

A doorway first: two arched leaves of stone, grooved to imitate planking and set with ring handles, cut directly into a block of Chinese calcite. Above them the brick courses run honey and cream with several blocks flushed lilac, and then the carving simply stops — the upper third is left as the mineral grew it, a rough crest of pale sky-blue crystals standing in for a roof.

That contrast is the entire idea of the piece. Calcite (CaCO3) takes a clean edge under the tool because it is soft, Mohs 3, and cleaves in three directions, which is also why the carver stopped short and let the crystallised face finish the job. The yellow-white and purple zones showing through the brickwork are the original banding of the block, cut across rather than applied.

This is a substantial object: 20.3 cm wide, 14.7 cm tall, 5.6 cm deep and 3330 g — 3.33 kg — so it wants a shelf rather than a cabinet drawer. The photographs are of the actual piece offered here.

Will I receive the exact specimen shown?

Yes. Every specimen is a single, one-of-a-kind piece, and the photographs show the exact item you will receive — never a stock photo.

Is this Calcite natural?

Yes — specimens like this form naturally. As is standard in the trade, some pieces are gently cleaned or trimmed; we photograph the actual specimen and describe its origin and condition conservatively.

How is it packed and shipped?

Can I return it?

Yes — there is a 14-day return window.
