About this specimen
Light travels several millimetres into this one before it gives out. The whole head is a soft celadon green, strongest across the back of the cranium and paling towards the face, and the surface keeps alternating between frosted sugary ground where cleavage planes step over the skull and slick worked faces at the orbits, nose and teeth. One shoulder of the cranium is close to white — a growth zone the carving happened to open.
Green fluorite of this kind owes its colour to defects and trace impurities locked into the CaF2 lattice rather than to one colouring element, which is why the tint wanders from zone to zone inside a single block. Keep it off gritty shelves: at Mohs 4 the worked areas mark readily, and with four cleavage directions running through it a knock on the jaw is the thing to avoid.
