About this specimen

Look into this crystal rather than at it. Beneath an ice-pale lavender surface, drifts of white feathery inclusions hang in the interior like snow caught mid-fall, and behind them run bands of deep violet tracing the square outline of a smaller cube the crystal once was. The outer faces climb in parallel terraces, glassy where they are clean and frosted cream where a little matrix still clings along the top edge.

Phantoms form when growth pauses. A film of another mineral settles on the crystal’s faces, growth resumes and seals it in, and the old surface survives as a ghost outline inside the finished crystal — a record of the chamber’s chemistry at one moment. The violet zones between those ghosts are colour centres in the CaF2 lattice. Mohs 4 with perfect cleavage in four directions, so never grip it hard across the corners.

Measuring 4.6 × 3.0 × 2.5 cm at 35 g, the crystal is shown resting in a fluted white cradle on a clear acrylic block. The stone in every frame is the one that will be wrapped for you.
