About this specimen
Sea-foam green beneath a matte, frosted skin, this skull is faceted rather than glossed: broad flat planes step across the cranium where the fluorite parted along its natural cleavage, and each one takes the light as a soft satin sheet instead of a mirror. Colour pools at the back of the head and along the jaw, thinning almost to clear over the brow and the small cubic teeth.
That faceting is fluorite being itself. The species cleaves perfectly in four directions parallel to the octahedron, and on a carving this size the planes are large enough to read right across the skull, their pale seams tracing where one gave way to the next. At Mohs 4 the surface scratches with very little provocation, so keep it away from keys, grit and other stone.
It measures 9.7 × 7.4 × 6.1 cm and weighs 572 g. The mirrored double beneath it in the photographs is the black glass it was set on for shooting, not a second piece; no base is included, and the carving in frame is the one that ships.
