About this specimen

Held up to the light, the cubes on this Zhejiang plate all but vanish. They are ice-blue and close to water-clear, and in the larger ones a deeper teal core hangs inside the glass like a shadow that never reaches the surface. Edges are sharp, faces are mirror-flat, and a white granular crust runs along the top of the plate to set the blue off.

Zhejiang has a long reputation for fluorite of exactly this quality: high transparency, restrained colour, cubes meeting at clean right angles. The colour zoning is a growth diary — a spell when more of the trace elements responsible for the blue were available, later sealed under paler layers. Fluorite is CaF2 and Mohs 4, soft enough that a careless knock will bruise an edge, and its perfect octahedral cleavage means chips run at an angle across the cube faces.

The plate runs 10.4 × 6.1 × 4.6 cm and weighs 300 g. What you see in the images is the piece that will be packed and posted — no substitutes.
