About this specimen
Clear quartz points fan out in every direction from this Yaogangxian cluster, the two longest leaning out at steep angles and tapering to sharp, undamaged terminations. Tucked among their bases are cassiterite crystals of a hard, oily black that swallows light where the quartz throws it back, and at the lower right a pale purple fluorite edges into view beneath the crystal front. A few brass-coloured metallic points sit low on the plate.
That trio — quartz, cassiterite, fluorite — is the fingerprint of a tin-bearing greisen vein, and Yaogangxian in Chenzhou, Hunan, is the classic Chinese address for it. Cassiterite is SnO2, the principal ore of tin, surprisingly heavy in the hand and hard at Mohs 6–7. The quartz shelters it here; the fluorite, at Mohs 4, is the softest thing on the piece and the part to watch when handling.
The plate runs 7.4 × 3.8 × 4.6 cm and 150 g, supplied loose without a mount. Treat these photographs as a portrait of the actual piece rather than a sample of the type.
