About this specimen
Tarnish has turned this little Hunan stibnite into something closer to a pheasant feather than a sulphide: deep indigo, violet and bronze slide across the striated blade faces as the piece is rotated. A pale olive-green crust of micro-crystals clings to the upper third and along one flank, softening the metal with a mossy, matte edge, and a narrow cavity opens between the blades near the top.
Stibnite, Sb2S3, grows in these deeply grooved prisms because its structure is built from chains of antimony and sulphur running parallel to the long axis — the grooves are the chains made visible. It is also among the softest things a collector will ever shelve, Mohs 2, soft enough that a fingernail marks it. Keep it out of strong light, lift it by the base, and never wash it: the iridescent film is a surface layer and scrubbing takes it straight off.
