About this specimen

A single water-clear calcite crystal, stout and gently tapered to a blunt point, breaks out of the left end of a pale sugary matrix plate. The rest of the plate is a crust of fine white grains studded with grey-green specks and one warm rust-coloured streak, with a couple of smaller clear blades half-buried near the right edge.

The piece is offered as a UV-reactive specimen: Hunan calcite of this kind answers shortwave ultraviolet with a warm orange-red glow, a response driven by traces of manganese standing in for calcium in the CaCO3 lattice. In daylight it is simply a clean transparent crystal on a contrasting bed. Calcite is soft at Mohs 3 and splits along three cleavage directions, so the terminated tip is the part to protect.

The plate runs 8.6 × 5.1 × 4.6 cm and weighs 115 g, wide enough to bridge two fingers in the photograph. No stand accompanies it; the flat underside sits level on a shelf. The specimen shown is the specimen sent.
