About this specimen
The colour sits inside, not on the surface: each of these Fujian crystals is a smoky blue-violet shell wrapped around a core of deep indigo, and where two crystals overlap the darker cores line up like ink dropped into glass. The large ones on the right are cubes with their corners cut back by octahedral faces; toward the left the crystals shrink to a sugar-fine crust of near-colourless cubes on dark grey rock.
Fujian blue-violet fluorite — Tanzan fluorite in the trade — owes its look to sharp colour zoning rather than to one even tint, so it reads almost black from one angle and vividly transparent from another. Fluorite is CaF2 at Mohs 4 with perfect octahedral cleavage in four directions, so handle a piece this heavy by the matrix and not by a crystal corner. Some Fujian fluorite responds to UV; assume nothing until you have tested this one yourself.
