About this specimen

Dimensions: 3.2 × 2.5 × 4.4 cm (1.26 × 0.98 × 1.73 in); longest edge 44 mm (1.73 in).

Warm rust-brown limonite has replaced a formerly free-growing pyrite crystal while preserving its unusual angular outline. Broad sloping faces meet along pronounced ridges, and darker seams divide several adjoining planes. The reverse displays a more layered texture and a shallow recess near the upper edge. With no attached matrix, the specimen can be viewed around its complete form, showing how the earthy replacement surface follows the geometry of the original metallic crystal. Estimated weight: 40 g / 1.41 oz, calculated from its dimensions.
