About this specimen
An 18-centimetre run of golden quartz points fans outward from a common ridge, so the whole plate reads as one long crest of spears. The colour is a warm mango-orange, deepest where the crystals crowd together and paler out at the tips, and the material is translucent enough that light travels several millimetres into a crystal before it scatters. Terminations along the top edge are sharp and stand clear of one another.
Quartz (SiO2) is colourless when pure; the warm tone sold as mango quartz is generally put down to fine iron-oxide inclusions taken up during growth, staining the crystal from within rather than sitting on the surface. At Mohs 7 the material itself is durable—on a plate like this the fragile part is the forest of slender tips, not the quartz.
Measured at 18.2 × 7.4 × 6.7 cm and 362 g, it shows best lying on its long edge with the crest up; no stand comes with it. Everything in the photographs above is this one plate.
