About this specimen

Black barite blades cross each other at every angle, thin as slate chips and edged here and there in cream white, and the whole tangle is sprinkled with vanadinite: hundreds of minute amber to olive-gold crystals that catch the light like frost settled on charcoal. Turn the piece and the barite shows the soft pearly sheen it gets across cleavage surfaces.

Vanadinite (Pb5(VO4)3Cl) is a lead vanadate that crystallises in the oxidised upper levels of lead deposits, and Morocco has long been the classic source for it perched on barite. It is very soft, Mohs 2.5–3, so the sparkle should never meet a brush. Barite is little harder but unusually dense for a non-metallic mineral, which is why the piece feels heavier than it looks.

It measures 4.6 × 3.8 cm across the face and 1.8 cm deep at 26 g, mounted with putty on the clear acrylic cube shown. The photographs show the specimen you will receive, cube included.
