About this specimen
A handful of stout black prisms fan out from one point like spokes off a hub, their faces grooved with the deep lengthwise striations tourmaline wears as a signature. The finish shifts as the group turns — satin along the ribbed sides, near-glassy where a termination has survived intact — and a cream-white granular crust threads up through the middle of the spray, wedged into the gaps between crystals.
Tourmaline is a borosilicate with a trigonal structure and a hardness of 7 to 7.5, the black variety taking its colour from iron. It is one of very few minerals that is both piezoelectric and pyroelectric: warm a crystal and its two ends develop opposite electrical charges, which is why long-shelved specimens end up wearing a coat of dust and lint no matter how clean the cabinet.
At 5.1 × 4.1 × 3.3 cm and 50 g this is a comfortable palm piece, supplied on the clear acrylic block seen in the images and held with removable putty. Those photographs show this exact cluster.
