About this specimen
Two arms lift from a common stem in a wide V, each built from thousands of fused copper knobs and hooks with daylight showing through the gaps between them. The metal has aged to a warm brick-red, darker in the hollows, and small white crystal grains cling in the recesses. Flattened to about a centimetre and a half, the whole thing behaves like open metal lace rather than a solid lump.
Copper is one of the few metals that occurs uncombined in the earth, and it crystallises in the cubic system; grown in a narrow fracture it branches along crystallographic directions and produces exactly this arborescent form. It is soft at Mohs 2.5 to 3 and slightly malleable, so a pressed branch will bend rather than snap. Handle as little as possible — skin oils dull the patina, and the surface is best left as the mine left it.
The spray spans 10.7 cm across, stands 8.1 cm tall and is 1.5 cm thick, at 125 g. All photography here is of this single copper spray, held in hand for scale.
