About this specimen

Jinkouhe, Sichuan, baryte at 45 g; a small cabinet piece with one clean crystal. A single pale, translucent baryte crystal on a tan base with small quartz crystals along its lower edge; the supplier calls it pure baryte.

Baryte (barite) is barium sulfate: heavy for its size, soft, and prone to tabular or bladed crystals with a bright vitreous lustre.

Jinkouhe in Leshan, Sichuan, is the source of prehnite, gypsum and epidote specimens from a road-cut skarn discovered in the 2010s.

The piece is small cabinet in size, 6.1 × 3 × 2.5 cm (2.40 × 1.18 × 0.98 in) and 45 g (1.6 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
