About this specimen
Olive-gold blades cross and re-cross here like a lattice assembled in a hurry: tabular barite crystals, each a flat golden panel edged in bright light, stacked at every angle until the cluster reads as one interlocking mass. Over and through them run paler blades, almost colourless with a warm blush, catching the light on their broad faces while the gold ones glow from within.
Barite is BaSO4 — orthorhombic, only 3 to 3.5 on the Mohs scale, and startlingly heavy for its bulk. That weight is the giveaway when you first pick a piece up: 145 g in a cluster barely 6.6 cm across. The softness deserves respect too, since thin blade edges chip more readily than their glassy shine suggests.
