About this specimen

Morocco blue baryte at 2.2 cm; a thumbnail, supplied in the display box shown. Baryte blades in pale blue rise in a thin crest from an orange matrix, each crystal transparent and sharply pointed with the blue strongest where the blades overlap.

Baryte (barite) is barium sulfate: heavy for its size, soft, and prone to tabular or bladed crystals with a bright vitreous lustre.

Moroccan vanadinite from the Mibladen district is the world standard for the species, prized for red colour and sharp hexagonal form.

The piece is thumbnail in size, 2.2 × 1.2 × 0.4 cm (0.87 × 0.47 × 0.16 in). Condition is otherwise as photographed.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
