About this specimen
Inner Mongolia phantom purple fluorite with pyrrhotite and calcite at 560 g; a cabinet piece with three species.
Pyrrhotite crystals are hexagonal and bronze-toned, and a small magnet will pick up the attraction that separates it from pyrite.
Calcite is the most shape-shifting of common minerals: over 800 crystal forms have been described, and Chinese localities produce many of the best.
The Huanggangliang skarn district of Inner Mongolia is one of the great mineral finds of the 21st century, known for fluorite, calcite, garnet and rare species.
Dimensions place it in the cabinet range, 10.2 × 8.1 × 7.8 cm (4.02 × 3.19 × 3.07 in) and 560 g (19.8 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.
