About this specimen
A pale pistachio spire of prehnite climbs a good four centimetres clear of its base here, built from fused botryoidal lobes with a soft waxy sheen and a translucency that lets light sink a little way in before it stops. It stands on a mass of frosted white quartz peppered with jet-black crystals, and the colour contrast — green, white, black — does most of the work without help from a display case.
Prehnite is a calcium aluminium silicate that almost never grows as a single free crystal. Instead thousands of minute fibres radiate outward together, and the rounded surface you are looking at is the ends of all those fibres arriving at once. At Mohs 6 to 6.5 it is tougher than its soft green colour suggests, though the quartz beneath is what you should take hold of when you lift the piece.
Standing 8.2 cm tall on a footprint of 6.2 × 4.8 cm and weighing 207 g, it balances upright unaided and needs no stand. Everything shown in the images is this specimen.
