About this specimen
Colour lands in patches on this Guizhou plate. Most of the fluorite is a pale, watery lilac; then, crowded along the top edge, come abrupt blocks of deep violet, as though the pigment pooled in a few cells and skipped the rest. The crystals are cubes with their edges rounded off, stacked in low overlapping steps, and they thin out onto a white matrix that stays bare down the left-hand side.
Patchy zoning like this is normal for the species and worth understanding: the violet is not a pigment at all but a defect — electrons trapped at vacancies in the CaF2 lattice, produced by natural radiation from the surrounding rock over geological time. Where the trap density is high the block goes nearly opaque; a millimetre away the same crystal can be almost water-clear. Mohs 4 and cleavable on the octahedron, so treat the exposed corners gently.
A flat plate at 4.6 × 4.6 × 1.8 cm and 35 g, low enough to lie in a drawer or lean upright in a case. Only this plate went in front of the lens.
