About this specimen

Four small Hunan crystals share one foam-lined box, and no two behave the same way. Top left, a violet fluorite sits on a crust of tiny colourless blades. Top right, a pale blue-violet crystal is patched with deeper purple where the light catches it. On the right, a group of clean violet cubes steps across an olive-green coated matrix. At the front sits a milky, near-colourless crystal with the faintest green cast.

A set like this earns its keep on a study shelf rather than a display stand. Laid side by side the pieces show how far one species travels inside a single district: cube size, colour, matrix and surface all shift from crystal to crystal, and the pale one makes the point that purple is not a constant even within one pocket. Fluorite is Mohs 4 and cleaves perfectly on the octahedron, so these are happier in their box than loose in a drawer.

The recorded measurement for the lot is 2.8 × 2.0 × 2.3 cm at 15 g. All four pieces in the photograph travel together, in the black lidded display box they are pictured in.
