About this specimen
The purple sits in the middle of this cube like ink trapped in glass: a dense violet core fading outward through lilac to an almost colourless rim, so the crystal appears framed by its own pale edge. A second, paler cube leans against it on the left. Both rest on a flat plate of ochre and cream druse, its sugary surface broken by rust-brown patches and one small clear crystal near the upper right.
Zoning of this sort is a growth record. Fluorite takes its colour from defects and trace elements built into the lattice as the crystal grows, so a change in the fluid mid-crystal shows up as a hard colour boundary rather than a blur — the pale outer shell here formed after the violet interior had already stopped. Held up to a window the core darkens and the rim all but disappears. Mohs 4, perfect octahedral cleavage: handle it by the plate.
Plate and crystal together measure 3.3 × 1.8 × 3.6 cm and weigh 30 g. Every image here was taken of this plate, still on the putty and acrylic stand pictured.
